“Sarihani’s stunning and moving image allows us to see the beauty and fragility of our planet,” said Natural History Museum Director Dr. Douglas Gurr.

“His thought-provoking image is a vivid reminder of the inextricable connection between an animal and its environment and serves as a visual representation of the negative effects of climate warming and habitat loss.”

Sarikhani took the picture after three days of searching for polar bears in thick fog in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard.

The public could vote on a shortlist of 25 images. The other four finalists received ‘high marks’ for their photos, which included a happy turtle, two tigers caring for a tiger cub, a flock of birds and a photo of the northern lights.
