Chief of Defense Staff General Giorgice Vlad was right when he said Romania should prepare for anything, but it was a communication error, says UDMR leader Kelemen Hunor. He believes that it would be better if the discussion about voluntary military training began with President Klaus Iohannis.
Kelemen Hunor made these statements to Digi24, saying that everything should be placed in the current context “when there is this war near Romania that shows no signs of ending very soon.”
“But the Chief of the General Staff is right when he says that Romania should prepare for anything”
- “Romania has completed and continues to modernize the army.
- Of course, the discussion is about that volunteerism, because otherwise we would have to amend the Constitution, and I don’t think we would support a decision that would see us go back to conscription. (…) Perhaps it would have been better if this statement had been made by the Romanian president, who is still the commander of the army, and then perhaps it would have been understood differently.
- But the Chief of the General Staff is right when he says that Romania should prepare for anything – this is what everyone in Europe does, without panicking, without creating panic, without saying that war is inevitable.
- This is not true, there is no such danger, and it must be said again. Once we’ve outlined the context, we can discuss the details. (…) So, it was a natural order, a political discussion, a discussion of the President of Romania, then in the parliament, and then, of course, General Vlad and those in charge of the army should come forward with their arguments and with the support of the respective region.” – said the leader of the UDMR.
“If society is not prepared and there is no calm approach, then the world immediately panics”
He insisted that there is no imminent danger, but he is also not “very optimistic” given the forecasts for the development of events in this region: “If society is not ready and there is no calm approach, then immediately the world will panic, and this should be clear to General Vlad and politicians , and those who support and those who do not.”
The leader of the UDMR drew attention to the fact that there is responsibility both at the level of the army and at the political level.
The head of the army urgently demands a law on training the population: Russia will not stop there. I don’t want to send an alarmist message, but this is the reality we live in
The Chief of the Defense Staff, General Giorgice Vlad, said that it is desirable to introduce voluntary military service aimed at young people between the ages of 18 and 35 who wish to wear a military uniform. He noted that it is necessary to find the necessary tools to have a trained population. “This is a T0 moment when all European countries should think about preparing the population, and I don’t want to sound the alarm, but this is the reality we live in,” he argued.

- Cuke after the army chief said that the population of Romania should be worried: At the border of the conflict, we cannot be careless
General Giorgice Vlad, who has been in office since November 2023, has warned that the Romanian army does not have the necessary law to prepare the population to face the expansion of the war in Ukraine, as well as to act according to the existing military danger. He stated that he is “more than convinced that President Putin’s policy will intensify in the next period.”
“Yes, the population of Romania, like the entire population of the European Union, Europe, should be worried and we should take the appropriate measures to be ready,” said the head of the Europa Libera Army.
