White lived in the small West Virginia town his entire life, except for a period in World War II when he served in the United States Navy as a radar repair technician.
“I was in Manilla Bay [din Filipine] when the war ended and my ship headed for Tokyo. Me and a few others were taking officer exams so they left us there and our ship moved on. So we had to hitchhike from Manila to Tokyo on planes,” he told WDTV.
