Goran Ivanisevic is frank: “Djokovic just didn’t play well, he’s human, it happens even to him”

On January 26, Yannick Sinner made a big surprise: the Italian eliminated Novak Djokovic quite decisively in the semi-finals of the Australian Open-2024.

The Serbian has won the last 33 matches (!) played in Melbourne, and the 10 titles won clearly indicate that the Australian Open is Nole’s “home” tournament.

Coached by Darren Cahill, Sinner (22) won the match, 6-1, 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-3, and a few days after that match, Goran Ivanisevic comes in with an explanation.

In an intervention for SportKlub, coach Nole speaks with subject and predicate about the course of the ATP leader from the Australian Open, as well as about the defeat with Yannick Sinner.

Without making excuses, Ivanisevic says, among other things, that Nole was perfectly healthy at the time of the match with the Italian, that the entire tournament was below the standards of his student and that he is at least glad that Grishnyk defeated the Joker.

“Novak didn’t have any discomfort against Sinner, he was completely healthy, but he just didn’t play well.

Such things can happen even to him. He is human. Sooner or later you will have to lose.

It’s a shame it happened, but if you don’t play your best tennis against the Sinner, you don’t stand a chance.

From the very beginning, it was not a very good tournament for Novak, but let’s not make a tragedy out of it, let’s move on.” – Goran Ivanishevich.

“If you do have to lose to someone, I’m glad it was against the Sinner,” he added. Ivanisevych.

At the age of 36 (he will be 37 on May 22), Djokovic holds the record for most titles won in Melbourne: 10 (in 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2023).

Djokovic, who is currently on holiday with his family in Spain, has announced on his official website when he will return to the tennis court.

It will happen at Indian Wells (March 3-17), and then the world leader will also take part in Miami (March 17-31, 2024).
