Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, in a long message on Telegram, called for support for Western “anti-system” parties, especially on the eve of the upcoming elections to the European Parliament.

“Our task is to support these politicians and their parties from the West in every possible way, helping them apertum et secretum (open and secret, ed.) to achieve the right results in the elections,” – writes the vice president of the Russian Federation. This statement was made against the background of several elections in the West. Two main ones: the election of the future US president in November and the European Parliament elections in June. In total, 77 countries and 3 billion people will vote in 2024.

Medvedev remains very reserved about the identity of these parties. To describe them, he uses paraphrases: “a national program that opposes American globalism,” “both left and right,” or that opposes “the disappearance of the (Russian) homeland.”

Attempts of Russian interference have already been observed in several elections. They found themselves at the center of a scandal related to the 2020 US presidential election. A US intelligence report revealed that Vladimir Putin used his influence to help Donald Trump win the election. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been invested.

In France, the National Assembly was accused of serving the interests of Moscow. In a report on foreign interference by MPs – and piloted by Renaissance – Marine Le Pen’s party was described as a “drive belt” for Russian words. This mixed report is also supported by a Washington Post investigation published on December 30, 2023.

The question of interference in EU affairs becomes even more important as Russia leads the invasion of Ukraine from 2022. 27 EU member states allocate billions of euros to the military in Kyiv to support the military effort. This assistance may be called into question if the political balance in the European Parliament is disturbed.
