Territorial defense forces in the Sumy region managed to successfully repulse a Russian reconnaissance group that tried to cross into Ukraine, Lieutenant General Serhiy Nayev, who is responsible for the defense of Ukraine’s northern border, said on Sunday, The Kyiv Independent reports.
On Saturday evening, the Ukrainian military opened fire on an armed group of ten people on the outskirts of Glukhov, near the border with Russia.
The Russians split into two groups, one of which tried to bypass the Ukrainians, Nayev said.
But a Ukrainian counter-sabotage group arrived and fired on the Russians, pushing them away from the Ukrainian border after a 90-minute battle.
Another Russian group evacuated the dead and wounded.
Although Sumy Oblast was liberated from Russian occupation in the spring of 2022, it is subject to frequent bombings and attacks by Russia. Russian forces bombed the Sumy region 76 times in 16 separate attacks on Saturday, shelling five settlements along the border.
On January 27, a Russian reconnaissance and sabotage group staged an attack that killed two civilians.
