Toyota has been the world’s largest car manufacturer for several years, and 2023 was a record year, as sales reached an unprecedented level of 11.2 million vehicles. The hybrid segment did very well, but the electric segment is poor, as only 1% of the group’s sales worldwide were fully electric cars.

The Toyota Group (including the Lexus, Daihatsu and Hino brands) sold 11.2 million vehicles worldwide, half a million more than in 2019 (10.7 million). Compared to 2022, the increase was 7%.

In 2020, Toyota regained the first place in the world for car sales from Volkswagen. Last year, Toyota was relegated to the top spot in the world, two million units behind VW (which finished with 9.26 million vehicles). In third place was the Hyundai-Kia group with total sales of 7.3 million cars.

Toyota is struggling with its image after the Daihatsu brand was caught in a car certification scandal. While Toyota is doing great overall, it’s doing very poorly in the all-electric segment, selling just 104,000 vehicles last year.

The total volume of production of the Toyota group last year was 11.5 million cars.
