A new blow for Toyota. On Monday, January 29, the manufacturer announced the cessation of deliveries of ten of its diesel models. This decision was taken after the detection of violations in the certification of engines produced by the subsidiary company Toyota Industries. No information was provided on the sales volumes they represent.
Among the mentioned vehicles, which are sold in Asia, Europe and the Middle East, there are well-known models in our country, such as the Hilux pickup or the Land Cruiser 300 4×4.
Toyota has been in turmoil for several weeks
The announcement comes in an already sensitive context for Toyota due to a previous scandal involving falsified tests involving another subsidiary, Daihatsu. Daihatsu production was suspended in December following the revelations. In March 2023, Toyota Industries already reported violations in the emission certification of its forklifts and construction equipment, which led to a product recall in Japan. An independent investigation confirmed that three diesel engines produced by Toyota Industries for cars were also affected by these violations.
According to the brand’s press release, during certification tests, the power of the three diesel engines in question was measured using software different from that used in production, resulting in certified values that show “less variation.” Despite these violations, the manufacturer guarantees that the engines and vehicles meet the performance standards, and therefore there is no need to stop using them.
Deliveries are suspended until further notice
Toyota Industries has decided to temporarily suspend deliveries of the affected engines the manufacturer itself suspends deliveries of models equipped with these engines.
Toyota’s statement reads: “We are aware of the seriousness of the fact that the repeated certification violations at TICO (Toyota Industries Corporation), following the violations at Daihatsu, have shaken the very foundations of the company as a car manufacturer. »
The group also promised to provide detailed explanations to the Japanese authorities regarding this new scandal and to take appropriate measures quickly.
