Three American servicemen were killed and several others were injured in a drone strike on US forces stationed in northeastern Jordan, near the border with Syria, US President Joe Biden said on Sunday, blaming Iran-backed groups for the attack, Reuters reports.
“While we are still gathering information about this attack, we know it was carried out by Iranian-backed radical militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq,” Biden said in a statement.
The incident marks the first US military death in the region since the start of the Gaza war. Biden said that the attack happened on Saturday night.
President Biden’s statement did not say how many soldiers were injured, but CNN reported that about 25 US service members were injured in the attack.
