The court ruled in favor of the plaintiff, Iklal Mein Kirikkanath, who claimed that Shafak Flea Palace was similar to her tome Sinek Sarai (Palace of Flies).

“The similarity between The Flea Palace by Elif Safak, first published in 2001, and Synek Sarai, first published in 1990, is not a mere coincidence. Examining the plot, characters, setting and chronological sequence of both books, it can be concluded that Elif Safak was not only inspired by the title and content of Sinek Sarayi by Mine Kirikkanath, but also greatly benefited from it. plagiarism, the court said.

“This appropriation is recognized as a violation of Mine Kırıkkanat’s rights under the Intellectual and Artistic Works Act,” he added.

Financial and material compensation will have to be paid by the French-born Shafak, whose books, including The Flea Palace, have become bestsellers in Turkey and abroad.

The court also ruled that the publishing house is responsible for material compensation and moral damage.

Shafak has the right to appeal within two weeks.
