The Baltic defense line is designed to stop the “armies of the aggressor”

Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds announced in a message posted on X that it was a “Baltic line of defense to protect NATO’s eastern flank and deny our adversaries freedom of movement.”

According to his Estonian colleague Hanno Pevkur, the need for this joint project “stems from the current security situation.”

“The war that Russia is waging in Ukraine has shown that, in addition to equipment, ammunition and people, physical defense structures are needed at the borders,” Pevkur emphasized, quoted in a press release.

Without specifying which objects it is about, the Ministry of Defense of Estonia states that “ground elements (will support) the actions of defense units (…) with the aim of stopping the troops of the aggressor, if necessary.”

These elements “will be placed on the landscape taking into account the results of the analysis of the enemy’s intentions, the situation and the defense plan,” the ministry notes.

The Baltic states have been one of Kyiv’s staunchest allies against Russia since the first day of the Russian attack on Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
