Mercedes-Benz CLA: what are the most common problems? Auto Plus news in your smartphone Auto Plus news in your inbox

The A-class has largely contributed to the rejuvenation of Mercedes. To continue this path, then designers envisioned the CLA, a four-door coupe launched in 2013, not to be confused with the rare Class A sedan. An important nuance for this model, which brings practical aspects to the altar of style. I have to say it an impressive pencil stroke that brings this coupe to life you have to bend your back to sit in the back seat. Liveability isn’t exceptional here, with roof clearance reduced by more than 5cm compared to the compact, which is hardly brilliant! But we find the design pleasing to look at despite the years. However, the processing details are horrifying: the hard plastics can suffer over time, and the rough settings are indeed…original. The screen placed on the dashboard, for its part, suffers from quite common errorswhich contradict the authority of the brand.

Dynamic sedan on the road

The CLA benefits from reliable Class A engines. This applies to the diesels that are built around the OM651 unit, which no one has talked about. The only point of vigilance is that the distribution chain may relax, but incidents remain isolated. On the part of the transmission, an automatic transmission with a double clutch (7 speeds) is important. It is gentle, does not affect consumption, and rids the center console of the traditional gearbox controls (the selector here is on the steering wheel). On the other hand, manual gearboxes are not very pleasant to drive. Firmly mounted on its suspensions, The CLA offers quite a dynamic driving experience, but it does not affect the comfort too much. On the other hand, you shouldn’t ask too much from the engines, as their agricultural sound is very present when needed. Also pay attention to the equipment : at a comparable price level, there are multi-equipped versions (and with a number of options) and others that do not live up to the reputation.

Points to look out for

Regarding reliability, before you start using this model, you should pay attention to several points:

  • Box 7G-DCT : Shocks may be felt during acceleration without mechanical consequences. Reprogramming can fix this (€150).
  • Distribution : on all diesel engines in our range (code OM651), the timing chain may loosen. An internal message was sent, but a callback was not arranged! A metallic click indicates a problem. Listen!
  • Historical : Premium models are popular and mileage fraud is not uncommon. Check that the numbers displayed on the meter are consistent with those appearing in the maintenance bookletespecially if it is an imported car.
  • Multimedia : Z a lot of mistakes (screen freezes, slowdowns, etc.) can affect the multimedia system. Then it needs to be replaced (1200 euros). Check the build as well as the navigation system to see if everything works.

We recommend: 200 CDI 7G-DCT Sensation

This medium power engine has good advantages: he is sober, quite effective, and as gentle and restrained as the 220 CDI. We can find examples with 140,000 km for less than €16,000.
