The capital’s mayor, Nikushor Dan, announced Thursday that he had approved a three-day protest by farmers and transporters in Constitution Square involving 5,000 people and 200 vehicles. At first, they asked for ten times more participants and for the demonstration to take place on Victory Square.
“We have approved the protest action, which will not affect traffic in Bucharest. It will take place on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday in the parking lot of Piața Constituției and is approved for 5,000 people, 100 tractors and 100 tractor heads,” Nikushor Dan wrote on Facebook.
“One of the reasons why Piața Constituției was accepted was traffic, because there is no traffic on Piața Victoriei,” the mayor said in an intervention on Digi24.
On Thursday, protesters appealed to the capital city hall to approve a demonstration on January 21, 22 and 23 in Victory Square, involving 50,000 people and 200 vehicles. Nikusor Dan rejected their request on the grounds that it was “unreasonable”.
Protests by farmers and transporters continue on Thursday for the ninth day in a row in Afumac and in several regions of the country, and the Minister of Agriculture, Florin Barbu, called the farmers protesting in Afumac and consider themselves unrepresented associations that were in meetings organized this week.
Today, on the agenda of the government meeting are draft regulations agreed with the carriers, who have been protesting at the national level for more than a week.
Prime Minister Marcel Cholaku announced on Thursday that the government will adopt the first package of measures agreed with farmers and transporters. “It is clear that the protests were justified, and the decisions we are making confirm that most of their demands are absolutely legal,” the Prime Minister said at the beginning of the Government meeting.
