The Copa del Rey Round of 16 derby is being played in Madrid between the great local rivals just eight days after the last head-to-head match played in the semi-finals of the Spanish Super Cup in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), when Real Madrid won against Atletico Madrid, scoring 5- 3 after extra time (he would later win the trophy after 4-1 in the final against Barcelona).

Atlético Madrid entered the competition directly in the round of 16, a privilege granted to teams participating in the Spanish Super Cup, in which they defeated Lugo, a team competing in the Primera Federacion (third division), 3-1.

In La Liga, the team coached by Diego Simeone is in 5th place after 20 stages with 38 points, three behind Barcelona in 4th place, the last place that allows access to the Champions League (both teams, however, played one less game).

Atletico Madrid are on the back of two wins, one draw and two defeats in their last five official matches, regardless of competition, and in their last match they lost 3-5 to Real Madrid in the semi-finals of the Spanish Super Cup.

Atlético Madrid have won the Copa del Rey 10 times, most recently in 2013 after a 2-1 final against Real Madrid, and have lost nine more times in the last leg of the competition, most recently in 2010 (0-2 against Sevilla).

Real Madrid started the current Copa del Rey draw also in the Round of 16 of the competition. This status was achieved thanks to their participation in the Super Cup of Spain, in which they lost 3-1 to Arandina, a team that plays in the Segunda Federación (fourth division).

Carlo Ancelotti’s side are second in the league after 20 rounds with 48 points, one behind leaders Girona (who have an extra game in hand) and are coming off five wins in their last seven official matches, regardless of the competition, the last one in the final of the Spanish Super Cup in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), the score 4-1 against Barcelona.

Real Madrid has 20 Copa del Rey trophies in its history, the last of which was won in 2023 after a 2-1 final with Osasuna, and it has lost another 20 times in the last tournament, the last time in 2013 (1-2 with Atlético Madrid ).

The last time the two teams met was on 10 January 2024 in the semi-finals of the Supercopa de España in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), when Real Madrid beat Atletico 5-3 with goals from Rudiger (20), Mendy (29), Carvajal ( 85), Joseli (116) and Brahim Diaz (120+2), respectively, Hermoso (6), Griezmann (37) and Rudiger (78a).
