
A week ago, Finance Minister Marcel Bolosh estimated the cost of this year’s elections at 3.8 billion lei, given that 2024 is an election year in which European, local and parliamentary elections will be held in order, as well as the presidential one. However, Bolosh’s assessment concerns only the costs of organizing the four types of voting that state institutions will have, although the amount from state funds will be much larger.
The previous election year in Romania was in 2020, when only two types of elections took place – local and parliamentary. The first election cost 966,000,000 lei, and the parliamentary elections another 640,000,000, i.e. 1.606 billion in total. These sums were directed through the Ministry of Internal Affairs and local administrations to expenses strictly related to the smooth conduct of elections, such as the creation of polling stations, payment of labor of members of the stations, consumables (ballots, stamps), etc.
