DNA prosecutors, who a day ago raided the prefecture of Covasna and the house of prefect Raduli Istvan, are investigating investments related to the reconstruction of the headquarters of the prefecture in Sfantu Gheorghe, as well as the retrocession of the building. According to a press release sent by Covasna Prefecture on Wednesday, the documents were seized after the searches.

The prefect of Covasna, Raduli Istvan, claims that all investments were made in accordance with the law and that all investments made were necessary:

  • “In recent years, the outdated electrical network of the building (prefectural headquarters) was renovated because it could no longer cope with the growing demand for electrical and electronic devices, the floors in the offices were replaced, and the walls were plastered and painted.
  • The roof and facade were repaired, and the iron doors, which did not match the style of the building, were replaced with wooden ones.
  • These were necessary interventions, because the electrical network became dangerous, the roof was leaking, the floor in the offices was falling in, something had to be done. For months, together with my colleagues, I worked on real construction to improve working conditions and restore the buildings in the city center to their former beauty.

He added that “all this was done with public money, which, of course, should be taken into account to the last penny”:

  • “The authorities have the right, even the obligation, to check that every lei of taxpayers’ money is spent rationally and in accordance with the law.
  • I cooperated with the review team, I provided them with all the documents they requested, and I am convinced that both myself and my colleagues fully followed all the rules and procedures.”

The prefect also says that the DNA investigation also relates to the retrocession of the building, confirming that his house was also searched and documents seized.
