At the start of the year, Europe’s automotive sector is feeling the effects of a slowdown in orders for electric vehicles, and Stellantis’ Mirafiori factory in Turin is no exception.

Faced with falling demand, the company announced partial unemployment affecting 2,250 employeesfrom February 12 to March 3, 2024.

Why did Stellantis take such a step?

According to information provided by Reuters, Stellantis made this decision through weak demand in the automotive sectorthe reality is confirmed by a representative of Stellantis.

This measure is part of an approach to regulate production according to demand, a strategy that was already implemented in October and November last year to deal with a similar situation.

About 1,250 workers who assemble the electric Fiat 500 will be affected during the period of partial unemployment, as well as 1,000 others who work on the production of Maserati models.

What is produced at Mirafiori?

The Mirafiori plant, located on the outskirts of Turin, is one of the largest industrial complexes in the world, owned by Stellantis, the result of the merger of PSA and FCA. In addition to producing the Fiat 500e, the plant is also home to the Maserati Ghibli, Quattroporte and other GranTurismos.

It should also be noted that an 8,000 square meter Stellantis battery test center was recently opened at the same plant, demonstrating investment in research and development around electric vehicles, despite the slowdown in demand at the start of the year. .
