EU: will you soon be banned from repairing an old car? Auto Plus news in your smartphone Auto Plus news in your inbox

Since last summer, the rumors have become more and more persistent. European Union plans to ban overhaul of old cars.

On July 13, 2023, the European Commission proposed a measure that did not go unnoticed. When the owner wants to sell his used carit will be necessary to determine whether there is a car at the end of life. If so, it cannot be repaired as it would be considered a “disabled vehicle”.

What does the European Commission propose?

The proposal of the European Commission contains the concept “disabled vehicle”. But what is it about?

It would be a car of a certain age (the figure is considered 15 years), and with high mileage. The vehicle will be considered near the end of its service life. To prevent its further circulation, overhauling the car will simply be prohibited. These are operations such as engine replacementwith transmissionindividual parts of body and generally everything that exceeds the residual value of the car.

A rule that is still too vague

This rule will also apply to cars that have been dismantled, damaged by fires, damaged by floods, cars with serious corrosion, suspension or braking problems.

For the Commission, these repairs will lead to ” loss of primary identity of the vehicle“, which would justify their cancellation. According to Spanish media Escuderia, The commission would indicate on social network X (formerly Twitter) that the rule ” […] will only apply to a very small number of cars that are engine specific. This obviously does not apply to standard cars“.

Will this affect our classic cars such as Youngtimers? At the moment, no one can know that ” specificity is a specific driver ” or even “standard cars”.

As it stands, our inexpensive older cars could be significantly affected. But it seems unlikely that such a rule prohibiting the repair of vehicles older than 15 years will be adopted.
