Estonian police have arrested Russian university professor Vyacheslav Morozov, who is suspected of spying for Moscow, local media reported, as quoted by The Moscow Times.

Morozov, who until recently was a professor of international political theory at the University of Tartu, Estonia’s national university, was arrested by the Internal Security Service (ISS) in Tallinn on January 3 and has been in pre-trial detention since then, according to the report. to the Estonian daily Postimees.

Kristina Tonnisson, head of the Department of Political Studies at the University of Tartu, informed the teachers about the withdrawal of Morozov’s department due to the charges brought against him.

“We confirm that we have no reason to question the previous work of Vyacheslav Morozov, but given the new information, it is important to consider it on a critical note,” she told public broadcaster EER.

“Our trust was grossly abused,” she accused, without providing details about Morozov’s detention. A colleague of the Russian professor told The Moscow Times that his arrest “happened suddenly.”

Morozov recently shared on his Facebook page information about anti-war events organized by Russians living in Tallinn, as well as his research on civil society and political repression in Russia.

Before teaching in Estonia, he worked for more than ten years at St. Petersburg State University.
