Yampil, an Asiatic black bear found abandoned in a zoo in eastern Ukraine five months after the Russian invasion began, arrived at his new permanent home in Scotland on Friday, Reuters reported.
Named after the village in Donetsk region where he was found, Yampil was one of the few animals to survive in the zoo, which had 200 animals before Russian troops entered Ukraine nearly two years ago.
After his rescue, he was cared for by a Belgian charity before being brought to the Five Sisters Zoo, 32 kilometers west of Edinburgh.

“Recently a shell exploded near his cage when volunteers found him and he was suffering from a concussion. He was in terrible condition. If it had been another 5 days, we wouldn’t have been able to save him,” Brian Curran, owner of the zoo that has now received Yampil, told Reuters.
“We have the best team to take care of him and help make this transition as smooth and comfortable as possible for him,” Curran added.
For some time, Yampil will be in a temporary enclosure of the zoo, where there were other rescued bears, for example, from the circus.
