Volkswagen: soon three competitors of the electric Renault 5 Auto Plus news in your smartphone Auto Plus news in your inbox

Citroën ë-C3, Fiat Panda, BYD Seagull: competition for an electric car at a price of less than 25,000 euros thrown! Every group, every mainstream car brand is working on developing a B-segment city car to compete with the new Citroën ë-C3. Among its direct competitors, it is of course the new Renault 5 E-Tech, which risks seriously shaking it up, with its nostalgic neo-retro styling of the original R5. But Volkswagen is also actively working on the deployment of its “electric Polo”: the ID.2. It’s been teased for months with concept cars (namely the ID.2All) and a few photos subtly revealed by the brand, but it’s still a long time coming. And it, after all, will not be immediately…

Volkswagen ID.2 will appear no earlier than 2026

Under the pressure of the lobby, The European Commission has actually radically softened the upcoming Euro-7 air purification standard for cars with heat engines. If threatened, the latter will eventually be able to extend their career until 2030 based on the Euro 6 standard, which they must meet today. Given this observation, Volkswagen would make such a decision postpone the start of production of its ID.2 model for 25,000 euros. The compact car is expected to hit showrooms in 2025, but ultimately won’t arrive there no earlier than 2026, at least if the German magazine Auto Motor und Sport is to be believed. A way not to compete too much with the (next) Polo, which, without requiring a large investment, can continue to be offered at a lower price while still being profitable for the manufacturer.

Skoda and Cupra will have their own version

If this decision were to be confirmed, it would likely be justified by the lack of success, and therefore profitability, of the electric ID models. But postponing the mass electric model until 2026, Volkswagen risks falling behind its competitors again. Because by then Citroën will release its €23,300 ë-C3, the Renault R5, 4L and Twingo armada will start their surge, Dacia will update its Spring abundantly, and the Chinese (BYD and MG in the lead) will certainly not be sitting idly by.

But despite this delay, it’s brewing The Volkswagen Group will present not one, not two, but three models in this niche. Alongside the ID.2, it will be offering its small MEB Entry platform under its other two brands! Thus, Skoda will offer an electric alternative to its Fabiawhile for Cupra, the range will introduce a new model, under the current Born. Volkswagen will be “first served” before the appearance, certainly also in 2026, of its two counterparts.
