Romania’s gas imports today have increased to 5.8 million cubic meters and exceed 10% of national consumption. Although domestic production and storage is theoretically sufficient, some suppliers source gas from abroad because it is cheaper. According to HotNews.ro, the largest gas importing companies are OMV Petrom, E.ON Romania and Tinmar Energy. At the same time, a smaller amount, 0.4 million cubic meters, goes to the Republic of Moldova.
If Romania imported 3.8 million cubic meters yesterday, today the volumes imported from abroad have increased to 5.8 million and make up more than 10% of the country’s total consumption of 55.6 million cubic meters, according to Transgaz data.
We have 24 million cubic meters of current domestic production, and 25.8 million cubic meters from deposits.
Romania’s gas imports continue to increase day by day, as imported gas is cheaper and some suppliers leave gas in storage and bring it in from other countries.
One such company is OMV Petrom, which recently signed a contract to import gas from Turkey.
“It’s a decision of the suppliers, for example OMV Petrom can make that decision and they make it many times because imports can be cheaper,” Energy Minister Sebastien Bourduilla said on Digi24 last night.
Data obtained by HotNews.ro shows that OMV Petrom is the main importer, delivering 2 million cubic meters on Wednesday through the Negro-Vode entry point on the border with Bulgaria.
Last fall, OMV Petrom signed a contract with the Turkish gas company BOTAȘ, which allows the Romanian company to import up to 4 million cubic meters of gas per day from Turkey between October 1, 2023 and March 31, 2025.
One of BOTAȘ’s suppliers is Gazprom, which supplies gas from Russia to Turkey via Turkish Stream.

Other companies supplying gas from the south of the country are Tinmar Energy, AXPO Bulgaria, MET Austria, Azomureș, Ozbor Enterprises and DXT International.
In total, 4.1 million cubic meters are supplied to Romania from Bulgaria.
The remaining 1.7 million cubic meters come from Hungary, the importers are OMV Petrom, E.ON Energie Romania, Axpo Bulgaria and RWE Supply&Trading.
A smaller amount, 0.4 million cubic meters, is exported to the Republic of Moldova from the operating balance account between the two countries.
