Mircea Lucescu had offers from Besiktas and Lyon

Mircea Lucescu left Dynamo Kyiv at the beginning of November 2023, and from that moment there was a lot of talk about returning to football.

In an interview with iAMSport, Il Luce clarified the names of the teams that really wanted him in the middle of the competitive season: we are talking about Besiktas and Olympique Lyon.

Both teams have problems this season, the development of events is far from the expectations of fans.

Mircea Lucescu also made it clear why he turned down both offers: after the episode with Inter Milan, the group he managed during the 1999 season, he does not want to train a team with a different coach.

“On Saturday, I met with them (not Beşiktaş officials), with the general director, I spoke for about five hours. I told them what mistakes were made in the team, I gave them advice from my experience.

I had a very good time at Besiktas (I didn’t coach the team from 2002 to 2004), we won the title. In the centenary year, we were champions. Neither “Galatasaray” nor “Fenerbahce” succeeded in this.

I presented my ideas very clearly. They do not take over the team in the middle of the championship. But if there is a question about the start of next year’s competition, then as the coach of the team, I agree. Their offer was for me to lead Beşiktaş for six months, and then if I want to and we agree, let’s continue.

The team no longer has a chance to fight for the title, and I’m used to coaching teams that fought for the championship. I need time to rebuild what was destroyed. So now it is out of the question, but if it happens from the summer, I will think about the offer” – Mircea Lucescuaccording to the cited source.

Mircea Lucescu is still far from football: “I feel so good with my grandchildren”

In the continuation of the dialogue, Mircea Lucescu talked about the present, which is dominated by the presence of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, those with whom he feels so good.

In addition, the technician also mentioned the second offer, which he refused, from Olympique Lyonnais.

“I feel so good now with my grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Yes, I refused that too (no offer from Lyon). There were discussions there too, but I didn’t want to for the same reason. Who risks to lead the team in the middle of the championship?

You are working with players you do not know, you have not participated in their training, you have not recruited them and you have not trained them. It is difficult. Therefore, even here, at home, I do not think of leading any team,” he concluded Mircea Lucescu for iAMSport.

Know:

  • Olympique Lyon is 15th in Ligue 1, first above the line, with 16 points. Toulouse, the first team in the relegation zone, has 14 points.
  • Besiktas, on the other hand, has 29 points and is in 6th place in the Super League. The leader “Fenerbahce” has 47 points.
