The Minister of Defense of Serbia announced on Thursday that the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Serbia will present to the President of Serbia, as Commander-in-Chief, and the Parliament an initiative to cancel the decision to suspend mandatory military service, writes Agerpres, citing the Tanjug agency.

With the help of this measure, the law on compulsory military service will be restored, said Vutsevich on Happy TV. He noted that the Ministry of Defense proposes to introduce mandatory military service for up to four months and this initiative is based on an assessment of the security situation in the country.

“After 13 years, we need to replenish the reserves (military no) (…). Our security needs are to have recruits who are always ready to defend the country.

We understand the security risks. This is not a need unique to Serbia – many European countries are re-introducing mandatory military service,” explained Vucevic.

He also noted that the decision to increase salaries in the army by 10% from January 1 is very important and that the Armed Forces of Serbia ended 2023 as a much stronger army in terms of military equipment and the level of personnel training.
