Philippine police are looking for three thieves who broke into a shopping mall through a tunnel they dug, stealing 41 million Philippine pesos (about 1 million euros) worth of jewelry and cash, Philippine media reported.
The incident happened on December 31, 2023 at the Gaisano Mall in Ozamiz City, about 783 km from Manila. Officials said the thieves dug a tunnel that started from a private compound next to the mall and led to a grocery store inside the mall.
When the three entered the mall, they forced open a MetroBank ATM and stole 80,000 pesos in cash.
They then took about 41 million pesos in jewelry and cash from the safes and display cases of GKC Jewelery and Oro Italia Fine Jewelery before fleeing the scene.
The robbery was discovered by an employee of the shopping center at 11:00 on January 1. The police detained an employee of the April shopping center, John Permangil, who is suspected of helping the thieves.
