Doctor Tudor Chuhodaru advises drivers not to get behind the wheel if they have consumed alcohol, and draws attention to the fact that the complete disappearance of ethyl alcohol from the blood at a blood alcohol level of 100 mg/dL occurs after 6-7 hours, provided that alcohol consumption is stopped.
“During the holidays, more than 30% of drivers aged 18 to 30 got behind the wheel at least once while under the influence of alcohol. Just a few drinks increase the risk of an accident by 10 times. Every third accident with fatal consequences is directly related to the use of alcohol,” Ciuhodaru writes on his Facebook page.
He points out that the ways to cheat the “bottle” that indicates alcoholism are just myths, and they have no effect – neither brushing the teeth, using chewing gum, cinnamon held up to the sky, or chewing parsley, confirming the use of pickles or drugs in the form of alcohol solution or lollipops containing alcohol.
“From a metabolic point of view, the blood alcohol curve has two phases: a rapid rise (due to digestive absorption) and then a progressive decline (due to excretion, but especially alcohol metabolism). Absorption occurs quickly (after 20-30 minutes, alcohol is detected in the blood) and depends on many factors: the type of drink, alcohol concentration, stomach contents, stomach motility, association with medication,” says the doctor.
Unlike absorption, which depends on concentration, excretion does not depend on it – 90% of alcohol is metabolized in the liver, and the rest is excreted by the kidneys, lungs and skin. On average, 5-10 g/h is metabolized, and after stopping alcohol consumption, the blood level drops by 10-25 mg/dL/h.
“For the same amount of alcohol, blood alcohol levels will be higher in those with a smaller body volume or those with lower enzyme activity (alcohol dehydrogenase, aldehyde dehydrogenase), mainly young women,” writes Ciuhodaru. (Agerpres).
