According to the preliminary annual balance published on Friday by the German Meteorological Service (DWD), the temperature in Germany was more than 2 degrees higher in 2023, the record year, the DPA agency reported, citing Agerpres.
The weather service already announced earlier this week that 2023 was the warmest year since records began in 1881.
In 2023, the average temperature reached 10.6 degrees Celsius for the first time, 2.4 degrees Celsius above the international reference period from 1961 to 1990, the DWD said after initial estimates. Compared to the period 1991-2020, the increase was 1.3 degrees Celsius.
“Climate change continues unabated,” warns Tobias Fuchs, DWD climate and environment specialist. According to the report, 2023 was dominated by warm, humid weather with significant rainfall.
DWD noted that this year was the warmest September on record since national records began. Also, according to DWD, 2023 ranks sixth on the list of years with the most precipitation.
According to preliminary estimates, the DWD recorded about 958 liters per square meter, a rainfall that is more than a fifth higher than the values of both reference periods.
