These are new brands that are taking Tesla’s side: the American electric car manufacturer wants to impose its own NACS connector (North American charging standard), allowing access to its network of Superchargers. A new agreement has just been signed with the Volkswagen Group for the Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche and Scout brands.
“This is great news for our electric vehicle customers in the North American region”said Pablo DiCi, president and CEO of the Volkswagen Group in the Americas: “This potentially gives them access to more than 15,000 additional charging points, in addition to the nearly 4,000 DC fast charging points currently operated by Electrify America. This would mean that customers of our best-selling electric vehicles, such as the Volkswagen ID.4, would have access to an extensive and growing network of chargers. »
Several brands of the Volkswagen group were affected
Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche and Scout Motors will implement the NACS connector in future products planned for the North American region, from 2025. Details of NACS-compliant models will be announced at a later date. Brands of the German group also plan to provide NACS adapters for existing modelsequipped with a port CCS Combo.
This decision will allow customers of these four brands to access the Tesla Supercharger network, which will offer new mobile charging solutions: over 15,000 Tesla superchargers As such, it will be open to Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche and Scout customers, in addition to more than 3,800 DC fast charging points operated by Electrify America and Electrify Canada.
The Electrify America network has already announced that it plans to offer the NACS connector by 2025 at its charging stations in North America, while continuing to offer Combo CCS connectors.
There are more and more fans of Tesla’s NACS connector
Tesla wants to have its own branded charger set a new standard, called NACS. As an argument, the American manufacturer stated that its connector is more compact and easier to use, and Tesla cars equipped with the NACS connector already make up the majority of the electric car market.
After Nissan, Toyota and Lexus, several major brands in the automotive market, Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, as well as Scout, announce support for Tesla’s NACS standard. Last May, Ford decided to use the NACS connector on its electric vehicles, followed by General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, Rivian, Volvo and Polestar. SAE International, the organization responsible for developing industry standards, recently announced work on a NACS connector standardization process to be called SAE J3400.
