Organizers of the first demonstration against the government of President Javier Mila on Wednesday in Buenos Aires will have to cover the costs associated with the mobilization of security forces for the occasion, a spokesman for the Argentine president said on Friday, AFP writes.
The cost, which includes the mobilization of four security forces – the federal police, the municipal police, the airport police and the gendarmerie – was estimated at 60 million pesos, or about $73,000 at the official exchange rate.
It is “a bill that will be sent to social movements” that will be “called upon to take responsibility for these costs that do not correspond to citizens,” added spokesman Manuel Adorni.
The government announced last week that these costs would be covered by the organizers.
A few days after the inauguration of the ultra-liberal president, thousands of people demonstrated in the center of the Argentine capital at the call of left-wing organizations.
Demonstrating the government’s austerity program, the demonstrators were framed by a major security measure criticized by organizers. “It reminds me of a dictatorship,” commented Eduardo Belliboni, leader of the Polo Obrero organization.
The device was personally observed by the President and Minister of Security, Patricia Bullrich, from the headquarters of the Federal Police.
“The force applied will be the minimum necessary but proportional to the resistance,” she said last week, adding: “The bill for this device will be sent to the organizations or individuals responsible. The state will not pay for such use of law enforcement agencies.”
Argentina, especially the capital city of Buenos Aires, is the scene of hundreds of road-blocking demonstrations every year.
