The battle for an affordable electric car has begun ! For years, car manufacturers have tried to achieve sophistication: to find the perfect formula to offer a versatile electric city car at a price of up to €25,000 or even €20,000. Renault promised this to its future R5 E-Tech AND Volkswagen with its ID.2but in the end it is Citroën e-C3, introduced a few weeks ago, which opened the festivities, for €23,300 (including a bonus of €18,300). Other manufacturers dream about it: Renault responded with its future Electric TwingoBYD with its Gulland others, like Hyundai, could respond by redesigning foreign heat models, e.g Casper. But despite this mad race of electric cars, brands are not giving up on the segment of warm, affordable and economical city cars…

MG enters the race

The Yaris, Clio and Jazz have paved the way for plug-in hybrids in this segmentwhile others have introduced mild hybrids in 48V: Peugeot 208, Suzuki Swift, Hyundai i20, Opel Corsa… Another manufacturer would also like to have its share of the pie: MG. After arriving in France in the fall of 2020Chinese brand focused on higher categories: city SUV, ZStwo compact SUVs, EHS and Marvel-Rcompact station wagon, MG 5. from, compact electric MG 4 entered the market in 2022: it offers one of the best value for money in the segment: from 29,990 euros and a range of up to 520 kilometers! But MG is not going to stop there. Achieving his 2023 targets by the end of September is a good indicator of his commercial fortunes, which he will confirm next year the arrival of the city car: the MG 3.

The new MG 3 will arrive in the spring

His arrival is inevitable: she has already been introduced, under a barely camouflaged dress, to the MG Motor France dealer network. It’s a fairly well-proportioned 5-door city car, with soft lines and rounded silhouette, according to technical schemes from patent applications (see photo). The interior is still kept secret, but several sources mention a the instrument panel is taken from the MG GT sedan, equipped with a 10-inch central screen compatible with Android Auto/Apple CarPlay and a 100% digital instrument cluster. We are most interested in its engines! MG will sell it in hybrid and micro-hybrid gasoline, the first in 130 horsepower and an e-CVT gearbox.
