
Despite its reputation as a reliable company, the Japanese firm is not immune to some technical failures that can lead to recall campaigns: in the United States and Canada, Toyota and Lexus have recalled about 1 million cars of the respective brandsfor important security issue.
Toyota and Lexus: a serious safety issue
This security issue affects numerous models from Toyota and Lexus brands :
- Toyota Avalon (2020 and 2021)
- Toyota Camry (2020-2022)
- Toyota Corolla (2020 and 2021)
- Toyota Corolla Cross (2022 and 2023)
- Toyota Highlander (2020 and 2021)
- Toyota RAV4 (2020 and 2021)
- Toyota Sienna Hybrid (2021)
- Lexus ES250 (2021)
- Lexus ES 300h (from 2020 to 2022)
- Lexus ES 350 (2020 and 2021)
- Lexus RX 350 (2020 and 2021)
- Lexus RX 450h (2020 and 2021)
Indeed, the Japanese manufacturer noted that on the corresponding cars Sensors of the OCS system (passenger classification system) located on the front passenger seat may be a production shortagecausing a short circuit.
This defect can be prevented airbag system to correctly estimate the passenger’s weight. An airbag can then do not deploy as expected in some collisions, increasing the risk of injury. The management of the Toyota concern took this problem very seriously.
About 1 million copies were recalled
By mid-February 2024, Toyota and Lexus will be contacting affected users through multiple communication channels.
For all affected models, Toyota and Lexus dealers will be responsible for inspecting the offending OCS sensors and, if necessary, replacing them with new sensors, operation free for owners
The recall currently affects approx 1 million copies of Toyota and Lexus models in the United States and Canada, but no information has yet been reported on possible implications for the European market.
