Powerful and efficient electric sports cars are not necessarily exciting. Let’s say they don’t necessarily awaken all the senses, starting with hearing.

However, the manufacturers intend to make these upcoming electric and sports cars more exciting to drive, as evidenced by Toyota’s work around a manual transmission that would simulate shifting gears.

And this is the strangest thing: Toyota, known for its pragmatism, recently went crazy with amazing cars like the latest GR Yaris or the GR 86.

The future of electric cars, barring an extraordinary twist, brands are working on gimmicks (and the word used is the right one…) to add some spice to electric carsespecially those that are supposed to be a bit sporty.

Electric cars make noise, but…

We were able to see this with Hyundai and its amazing Ioniq 5 N, which simulates shifting gears with jerks, and with a soundtrack that imitates the sound of a real heat engine. What makes driving more exciting? It will be checked.

BMW also has a roughly similar system, with sounds designed by the famous composer Hans Zimmer. As it turns out, this soundtrack is not reserved for the brand’s sports and electric cars, as almost all of them benefit from it. Let’s say it’s “ambient” sound, but it doesn’t copy the sound of a heat engine.

We could relate this to the Renault R-Sound Effect, a system that appeared in 2012 on the Clio, where the sound generator through the speakers imitated, for example, the Clio Cup, or the Vivastella, or even a “flying saucer”. .

Because ” why not ? “ !

From Toyota’s side, we plan to go even further by developing a playlist of sortslike on Spotify, for sports electric cars.

“Every GR product [Gazoo Racing] should stimulate all the senses. It can’t just be fun in a straight line.”– emphasizes Simon Humphreys, head of brand management, in the columns of our colleagues from Top Gear. “The car should also make you smile when cornering […] dWhat if you could download your favorite engine noise and dynamic behavior and create your own experience? »

“We created many prototypes of electric cars and it turned out that the sound has a significant impact on driving pleasure”emphasizes Masahito Watanabe, director of Gazoo Racing. “This is what we felt during development. We’re still working on creating a sound that’s as exciting as the car’s handling. »

Either way, we’re obviously asking to see (or rather hear), but if these technologies make electric sports cars more exciting to drive, why not!
