The offer applies to private customers in Germany who have ordered an eligible electric car from the ID series by December 15, the largest European automaker said. Vehicles delivered and registered in 2023 will receive a full subsidy of up to €6,750.

Cars registered between January and March 2024 will receive a subsidy of €4,500.

Germany’s economy ministry announced that Germany’s program will end early on Monday after around ten billion euros were repaid since 2016. On Monday, several car companies said they would make similar decisions to Volkswagen, including Stellantis, Mercedes-Benz and Hyundai.

Germany’s auto industry has expanded its range of electric vehicles after China and the United States overtook German automakers in the fast-growing segment.

According to the German Highway Authority (KBA), there were approximately 1.2 million fully electric vehicles on German roads at the end of April, well below the target of 15 million vehicles by 2030.

High prices, limited range and a lack of charging stations, especially in rural areas, are considered to be the main reasons for lagging sales of electric vehicles.
