UDMR President Kelemen Hunor said that after the partial collapse of the Tamasi Aron boarding high school in Odorhei Secujesk, which killed a boy, “a larger trench was dug near the building and for two or three days the children say that the walls cracked,” and the authorities have to find out “who warned, who left the children in the building during the works.”

  • “There is no greater tragedy for parents than learning about the death of a child. This is a tragedy and it should not have happened. Condolences to the family. One of the girls is headed to Tirgu Mures with a broken spine, the others to Odorheiu-Secuiesc. That’s all we know, they worked on the building for a few days, they dug a bigger trench next to the building and after two or three days the kids say the walls cracked. The question is who gave the approval, who left the children in the building during the works, I understood that there would be major repairs and if the work was done according to the approvals, the project. The guilty must be punished. As a parent, when I send my child to school, I want to know that they are safe, and that’s what all parents want. It’s a tragedy what happened. Something like this should not and should not happen in Romania,” Kelemen Hunor said on Digi24 on Monday, according to News.ro.

Answering the question whether he sees responsibility in this case, Kelemen Gunor noted that the local authorities give permission to repair the building and also take care of the construction site.

  • “It’s too risky for me to point fingers because we don’t know the project, the approvals given, we don’t know the decisions that are made on the ground, because neither the president, nor the minister of education, nor the government know. approves the work and does not supervise the execution of the work. This is the responsibility of local authorities. I can’t point the finger until I see exactly what happened. In 2022 and 2023, the government in which I was also approved 4 national projects for the reconstruction of earthquake-prone buildings, and even the last law, I think, was passed in April or May. We made a huge project and created legal and financial conditions for the rehabilitation of these buildings, because in Romania there are many buildings that are in a deplorable state and nothing has been done. But the path from here to the legislative framework and sources of funding is much longer,” said Kelemen Hunor.

The leader of the UDMR added that on Tuesday morning all institutions involved in this case were summoned by the prefect.

“I spoke with the prefect, tomorrow morning they will meet with all the institutions to see the message, to see everything that needs to be seen in this case, because those responsible must pay,” said Kelemen Hunor.

Four teenagers were buried under the rubble after a part of the boarding school building of Tamasi Aron High School in Odorheiu-Secuiesc collapsed. Soon, three female students aged 15 to 17 were pulled out from under the rubble, one of them is in serious condition, and the boy, who was pulled out after two and a half hours of searching, died.
