The artist Tudor Cirila says that at the opening ceremony of the monument to Monica Lovinescu and Virgil Ierunci, he had a reaction that can be considered inadequate, his rebellion was provoked by the presence of the Minister of Culture Raluka Tsurkan: “Maybe my revolted howl spoiled a ceremony, isn’t that what we learned from Monica Lovinescu and Virgil Ierunca, not to give up and not be silent?”.

A monument dedicated to Monica Lovinescu (1923-2008) and Virgil Jerunca (1920-2006), one of the most important voices of the Romanian emigration, was inaugurated on Sunday in the Cotroceni district of Bucharest, an initiative of the Humanitas Foundation and house publishing house. The monument was created by the sculptor Virgil Scripcariu.

The ceremony was also attended by Minister of Culture Raluka Tsurkan, who said that he grew up with “Free Europe”, infuriating Tudor Cyril, who was also present at the monument’s unveiling.

The ceremony was opened by Gabriel Liicianu, initiator of the Monica Lovinescu Centenary Year and President of the Humanitas Foundation, followed by Raluca Tsurcan, “who told the audience how she grew up with Free Europe, she also told, in wooden language, some banalities of the context, after which he concluded the speech , recognizing that the Romanian state cannot make such a monument or something similar,” reports Tudor Cirila.
