
The number of kilometers of expressways in Romania will increase significantly from next week when the UMB opens to traffic almost on the other 32 kilometers of DEx12, from Slatina to Kolonesti, close to the border between Olt and Arges counties. Now, Romania officially only has about 40 kilometers of real expressway after the DEx12 section that bypasses Balsul and Slatina opened to traffic last year.
The opening of section 3 of the Craiova-Pitesti highway will take place next week, State Secretary for Transport Ionel Irinel Skriostianu announced on Friday.
According to him, about 1,000 workers work in 2 shifts at the facility, which are at the final stage of work.
Section 3, which is approximately 31.7 km long and follows Section 2 (40 km) opened last year, will be almost fully open to traffic, but with a temporary relief at Kolonesti, where the expressway will pass under DN65.

DEx 12 Craiova – Pitesti – 121 kilometers, with four sections staggered between them
In total, the DEx12 Craiova-Pitesti expressway will be 121 kilometers long, divided into four sections. Now only a third can be used, the rest are in various stages of completion.
In the summer of 2022, the first 40 km of expressway was launched in Romania Section 2 Kraiova-Pitesti expressway.
The plot was built by the association led by the Romanian developer UMB, the same one that is also operating now Section 3and on lot 4 to the junction with the A1 near Pitesti (lot 4 has a completion date of 2024).
Enabled Chapter 1 (17.7 km) 358 million lei contract with the Italians from Tirrena Scavi was terminated in December 2022 at a stage of about 59% due to poor mobilization at the construction site.
For this section, CNAIR concluded a contract for the completion of the section for 440 million lei with the Association OZALTIN INSAAT TICARET VE SANAYI AS (leader) – STRADE BAUUNTERNEHMUNG SRL – VISIO CONSTRUCTION WORKS SRL. The association assumed that it would complete the work in 18 months.
Work has only recently started, but the minister and highways chiefs are hoping for a record-breaking completion if they announce that it will open in 2024.
