That’s it, we finally know the list of cars that will be eligible for the environmental bonus next year in France. This way, a day before the scheduled date, potential buyers can find out if the new electric car they’re after can benefit from this valuable subsidy.
It will be recalled that the government has decided to redraw the contours of the bonus rules for 2024, including more precise, even protectionist criteria, even if it refuses to use this term. This new version of the environmental bonus lies in its focus on vehicles with the best carbon footprint.
Various environmental criteria are taken into account, such as the materials used, the type of battery, the energy consumption of the factory and the impact of vehicles. In other words, this measure is aimed at stopping the production of cars in China, namely, for example, the MG4 or the Tesla Model 3. Two models that sell particularly well in France.
About 65% of electric cars sold in France are eligible for the new bonus. However, it is important to note that state selection focuses on specific model options, which implies importance carefully check the relevant configuration on the brands website. For example, eight different variants were chosen for the BMW iX1.
Renault and Stellantis rub hands
As for European manufacturers, almost all Renault and Stellantis models claim the bonus. So the Renault Mégane, Twingo and Zoé are still affected, as is the upcoming Renault 5 E-Tech. At Stellantis, among the selected models are the ë-C4, DS 3 E-Tense, Peugeot e-208, Fiat 500 and 600, as well as Opel Astra and Corsa.
As for Tesla, only the German-made Model Y retains its bonus. Model 3 imported from China is not on the list. Apparently, this is enough to prompt Tesla to reconsider its production policy and move part of the production of its Model 3 to the Berlin Gigafactory.
But there’s no doubt MG is paying a heavy price for this new policy, as its MG4 avoids it due to being made in China. The manufacturer wants to build a factory in Europe by 2025 or even 2026, but by then the bonuses may disappear in France or be even more limited!
As you can also see, this is also over for the Dacia Spring, which, like the MG4, is made in China.
