Where is Mazda in the great electric race? The Japanese manufacturer is quite “lagging behind” if you compare it with the main domestic competitorsHonda and Nissan in particular, which have multiplied models and developed platforms, batteries and electric motors. Mazda currently offers only one electric model in its range: the MX-30. This is a B-segment crossover that is offered in two versions: simple electric and electric with a range extender… thermal! Really, in R-EV form, the MX-30 is a clever mix between electric and hybrid powertrains : a small 35.5kWh battery that feeds the electric motor is supported by a heat engine and a 50 liter tank. AND A typical Mazda characteristicwhich, of course, offers only one model, but always under the sign of innovation…

Gradual development

But the manufacturer is clear: he knows that it will be necessary extend your electrical range, in Japan, USA and Europe. His boss, Masahiro Moro, who recently spoke with our colleagues at Automotive News, noted that “Mazda is a follower, not a leader.” In other words, the brand is not looking to hit the market with a slew of new electric products, but rather move forward at your own pace and in a measured manner. In 2025, a family electric SUV is planned, which will enter the American market as a priority: this is the next stage of its electric plan. Later, Masahiro Moro confirmed that he wanted to to launch “seven to eight electric models by 2030”, without specifying the schedule or characteristics of the considered models. The brand goes for it to get close to its compatriot Toyotafor the development of motors and software in particular.

Association with Toyota

Since 2017 the two brands are united in an industrial and capital alliance aimed, among other things, at the joint development of technologies for electric vehicles. Even if Toyota currently offers only two electric models (including one reserved for China), it has big ambitions for the technology and has increased the presentation of concept cars and innovations in the field in recent months. So Mazda seems to have bet on the right horse, especially since as a leading global brand, Toyota has considerable strength in design, development and manufacturing.

This is stated in the then press release “Toyota and Mazda plan to jointly develop technologies dedicated to the basic structure of competitive electric vehicles by freely mobilizing and sharing their know-how.” We’ll have to wait a bit before we see how electric Mazdas take over the world, but either way, the car seems well and truly running…
