A far-right Polish lawmaker fired a fire extinguisher at a menorah, a seven-sided candlestick that symbolizes Judaism, in parliament on Tuesday, an act that was immediately condemned by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, AFP reported.
“An unacceptable thing happened. It’s a shame,” Tusk told the media when parliament speaker Szymon Holovnia expelled Grzegorz Braun, an MP from the far-right Confederation party, from a parliamentary session.
The Menorah was lit in Parliament in honor of the Jewish holiday Hanukkah (Feast of Lights) in the presence of Jewish dignitaries.
Video footage captured by Polish media shows Brown spraying the menorah and filling the parliament hall with a cloud of foam from a fire extinguisher.
The speaker of the Sejm (lower house) condemned it as a “slap to the Polish parliament”.
“As long as I am the head of the Seimas, there will be no tolerance for anti-Semitism, deviations and racism,” thundered Golovnia, who interrupted the debate.
According to the results of the meeting of the presidium of the parliament, Holovnia said that Brown received the maximum financial sanctions and that the complaint against him will be submitted to the court. He added that the deputy could face up to two years in prison.
“Shame on you! A member of the Polish parliament just did it. A few minutes after we celebrated Hanukkah there,” Israel’s ambassador to Poland Yakov Livne said on social media, posting a video of Brown extinguishing the menorah.
Most parliamentary groups, including the populist nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party, condemned the act.
In May, Grzegorz Brown attacked Polish-Canadian Holocaust historian Jan Grabowski, a professor at the University of Ottawa, with a microphone during a conference in Warsaw.
