The car has never climbed so high. On December 2nd, two heavily modified Porsche 911s, running on synthetic fuel, climbed the 6734 meters in Ojos del Salado, Chile.

The record will be held by three-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner French driver Romain Dumas and an international team made up of members from Chile, France, Germany, the United States, Canada and Switzerland. .

Everything except the engine has been changed

As mentioned above, the expedition discovered two specially modified 911s nicknamed Doris and Edith. The Porsche that climbed the highest is the Edith, an off-road variant based on the current Carrera 4S rather than the new 911 Dakar.

Under the hood we find a 3.0-liter six 450 hp and a 7-speed manual gearbox. These two elements have not changed, but they are one. In addition to the presence of carbon fiber seats equipped with five-point seat belts, the ground clearance has been increased to 350 mm, a specific underbody has been added, and the electric steering system has also been significantly improved for greater precision.

Porsche wants to promote synthetic fuel

Both 911s used synthetic fuel produced by HIF directly in Chile. Made of water and carbon dioxide, the entire production process uses exclusively energy from renewable sources.

Remember that Porsche is one of the most active brands in the world of synthetic fuels, thanks in particular to the pilot plant Haru Oni (located in Chile, in Punta Arenas), which was inaugurated last year.

Otherwise, the entire expedition was organized with maximum security. The team stayed in Chile for two weeks to get used to the temperature and altitude, all under the supervision of two specialist doctors. In this way, Porsche broke the previous record set in 2020 – 6,694 meters.
