This is good news for motorists: from January 1, 2024THE minor speed violation (less than 5 km/h) will not no longer punishable by point deduction. The Government has just published the relevant resolution in the Official Journal for application from January 1, 2024.
This common-sense measure, unexpected in a context where motorists continue to be under pressure, was announced last spring by Gerald Darmanen, the Minister of the Interior:
“By order of the President of the Republic, from January 1, 2024, points will no longer be deducted for speeding below 5 km/h. The fine will, of course, be saved. A measure of common sense for our fellow citizens” said Gerald Darmanen.
Minor speed violations: the fine remains
For exceeding the speed limit by 5 to 20 km/h, the removal of points from the driver’s license will remain in force, and the fine will remain in force. Indeed, speeding below 20 km/h is still punishable by a fixed fine, the amount of which varies depending on the nature of the offence.
In areas where the limit exceeds 50 km/h, this traffic violation is punishable by a class 3 fine of €68, which can be reduced to €45.
In regions where the speed limit is less than 50 km/h, such as in built-up areas, this offense is punishable by a class 4 fine of €135, which can be reduced to €90.
More than 50% of cases of violation of the speed regime
According to the Government, small speed violations of up to 5 km/h are the most common violations in our regions: in fact, it is no less 58% of offenses observed by French radars in 2020.
Very often the fruit a a moment of inattentionthese small excesses still led to the withdrawal of points in the driver’s license and could cause numerous difficulties in the daily life of French motorists, sometimes reaching the cancellation of the driver’s license in case of increasing the balance to zero!
