Two cases of hypoxic cutaneous diphtheria have been confirmed in Bucharest, INSP representatives told News.ro, clarifying that the disease particularly occurs in people from vulnerable groups.
According to the cited source, both patients, who were confirmed to have non-toxigenic diphtheria of the skin, were hospitalized at Viktor Babesh Hospital.
The disease occurs in people from vulnerable groups, usually drug users, who live in poor conditions.
INSP representatives claim that since 1990, no case of non-toxigenic diphtheria of the skin has been registered in Romania.
“This is diphtheria of the skin. Non-toxigenic strains are not related to the respiratory form produced by toxin-producing strains, which is a public health problem,” said Health Minister Alexandru Rafila.
