To begin with, since the end of 2023 is a month away, let’s take a look at how the French car market is shaping up. It’s just, it has progressed everywhere in the first 11 months of the year compared to the same period last year (according to the PFA platform report). +16.2% for passenger cars, +10.6% for heavy trucks and +8.9% for light commercial vehicles. We are on one passenger channel 1,593,719 registrations since January. Despite this significant growth, we are a long way from the 2.2 million in 2019, an absolute record in France, and even the 1.8 million in 2013 and 2014, the “dark years” for the French automotive industry.
Electricity is superior to diesel
If we now look at how sales have developed by energy type, there have also been significant changes! The French still prefer gasoline, it accounts for 36.7% of registrations. passenger cars since the beginning of the year (compared to 2022 by less than one point). The real coup is that diesel fell below the symbolic bar of 10%, representing only 9.7% of registrations, compared to 15.9% last year. Hybrid (33.3%) and LPG (3.7%) are up, while Superethanol E85 (0.3%) is down. First of all, electricity explodes ! Compared to 13% last year, sales of battery cars represent now 16.4% of the total. Electricity has surpassed diesel, this is historic.
The French are in a hurry before the bonus shift
What is interesting to note In November, electric sales reached their peak: they accounted for 20% of the total volume, compared to 17% in October. A 52% increase over November 2022! And there may be a reason for this wonderful month of November for electricity sales: a change in the rules of the environmental premium, scheduled for December 15. After this date, a large number of low-cost electric models will cease to be eligible for the bonus, including those assembled in China (Dacia Spring, MG 4, BYD Dolphin, etc.). So it seems that French customers are rushing to order their precious electric model before the fateful date! If you plan to buy an electric car soon, you can– Maybe we should hurry!
