Julian Nagelsmann took charge of Germany’s first team in September following the sacking of Hansi Flick, but it is not certain that he will lead the team until the Euro 2024 finals.
Julian Nagelsmann, forced to win games with France and Holland ahead of Euro 2024
Former Germany international Dietmar Hamann has spoken about Julian Nagelsmann and suggested that possible setbacks in friendlies against France and Holland in March could see him replaced ahead of Euro 2024.
Hamann told Sky TV that the German national team had made no progress in the four games since Nagelsmann’s appointment and needed to get good results in the games in March.
“If things go wrong, Julian Nagelsmann will not be a selector at the European Championship. This cannot happen, we cannot afford it,” Hamann said.
The matches against 2022 world number two France and the Netherlands are the last before Germany announce their squad for the final tournament, which runs from June 14 to July 14. Nagelsmann, the former Bayern Munich coach appointed to replace Hansi Flick, is under contract until the end of EURO 2024.
It opened October with a 3-1 win over the United States, but November games saw two losses: 2-3 to Turkey and 0-2 to Austria.
“Nothing works no matter what he does. Now he doesn’t know more, maybe even less, than before four matches,” Hamann said.
The former midfielder opined that Nagelsmann is not using enough defensive players after Germany conceded 22 goals in 11 games this year. The former player demanded that the coach bet on a true defensive midfielder and a strong defensive line.
“How do you want to get some stability and control in the game? You don’t need to be an expert in nuclear physics. You can’t build a team around an offensive tackle. The best eleven players never make the best team,” he added, according to Agerpres.
In the group stage of Euro-2024, Germany will meet with Scotland, Hungary and Switzerland.
