The Hyundai / Kia group wants to revolutionize electric mobility Uni Wheel (Universal wheel drive system), a innovative transmission system allowing major transmission components to be moved into the wheel hub to save space and efficiency.
“We are happy to present innovative ideas that can fundamentally change the situation in the mobility market of the future. We will improve the technology so that customers can experience mobility in a completely new way.”Yongsol Park, senior member of Hyundai Motor Group’s Advanced Technology Development Institute, said on the occasion.
Uni Wheel: A more compact transmission system
In thermal cars, power transmission from the engine to the wheels is carried out with the help of transmission shafts and joints of equal speeds. In electric cars, the engine and transmission are replaced by an engine and a gearbox, but the method of transmission to the wheels remains the same.
The Uni Wheel improves on this and provides a flat-floor configuration by moving the electric vehicle’s gearbox inside the wheel hub and placing a compact motor near each wheel, thus reducing the length of the drive shafts.
In this way, the system frees up space compared to conventional drive systems, providing new possibilities, in particularimprove autonomy electric cars, allocating more space for the battery, or even make room in the cabin for passengers and their luggage.
Many possible applications
Technically, the Uni Wheel has a special planetary gear configuration with a sun gear in the center, four gears on each side, and a ring gear surrounding this arrangement. The power generated by the engine is transmitted to the sun gear, which in turn engages the gears to rotate the crown connected to the wheel to propel the vehicle forward.
In addition to electric vehicles, the Uni Wheel system can be used on other types of mobility, such as bicycles, wheelchairs or even delivery robots, regardless of whether these vehicles have 4 or 25 inch wheels. Thus, it will allow the Hyundai group to motorize all its cars more efficiently mobile solutions.
