Salvamont Busteni announced on Tuesday evening that hundreds of people went up to see the Sphinx despite the weather, even if they put their lives in danger, writes News.ro. Three hikers who were lost were found hypothermic and brought to safety at the lodge.
“Hundreds of people have visited the Sphinx from Buchegi even today. It seems even the blizzard couldn’t stop them, even if they risked their lives in this weather,” mountain rescuers from Buchegi said on Tuesday evening, posting images of weather conditions in the area on Facebook.
Rescuers report that three tourists from Bucharest were one step away from death after getting lost on the Bucegi plateau.
“They were found at the last moment, with hypothermia, and urgently delivered to the “Baba Mare” hospital. Tomorrow, depending on their condition and weather conditions, they will try to get them down from the mountain,” the mountain rescuers said.
Heavy snow has fallen in the mountain areas in recent days. According to meteorologists, at an altitude of more than 1,800 m, the snow cover is more stable on the northern outskirts of the Southern Carpathians, where in some places it exceeds 50 cm.
“The snow was powdery, light, without clumping. Larger deposits of snow and Trojans are found in sheltered areas. Wind slabs are found on the ridges,” the National Academy of Sciences reported.
“Energy pyramid” of the Sphinx
Every year, hundreds of people climb the mountain to see the “miracle of the pyramid of the sun”, a phenomenon that takes place on November 28, during which some of them get lost either because of the weather or because they are not properly equipped.
According to some participants, every year on this day, the sun’s rays form a pyramid at sunset around the Sphinx in Bucheja, and those who climb on this day are energized by the energy pyramid formed around the wind-sculpted stone.
Six years ago, on the same day, more than a hundred tourists got stuck on the Bucheji plateau, in the Sphinx area. Last year, mountain rescuers intervened to rescue two hikers who were climbing the mountain towards the Sphinx, but, not being properly equipped, they could no longer descend safely.
