Terry Venables, Barcelona’s coach in the 1986 European Cup final (lost to Stella), has died aged 80 after a long battle with illness.

Former Barcelona coach Terry Venables has died at the age of 80

Venables was also England’s head coach (1994/96) and led the team to the semi-finals of Euro 1996.

Terence Frederick Venables also coached Crystal Palace (1976/80 and 98/99), QPR (80/84), Barcelona (84/87), Tottenham (87/91), Australia (97/98), Middlesbrough (2000) / 01), Leeds (02/03).

“We are completely devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father who passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness. We ask that we be granted privacy at this incredibly sad time so we can mourn the loss of this wonderful person we were so fortunate to have in our lives,” the family said in a statement.

As a midfielder, Venables won two caps for England and made more than 500 appearances for clubs between 1960 and 1975, mainly for Chelsea, QPR and Tottenham, the BBC reports.

Former England greats Gary Likeker and Alan Shearer sent emotional messages following the sad announcement.

“I am very saddened to hear that Terry Venables has passed away. The best, most innovative coach I’ve had the privilege and pleasure of playing for. However, he was much more than a great manager. He was full of life, he was charming, he was witty, he was a friend. We will miss him very much” – Gary Lineker.

“Extremely sad news. The great Terry Venables has died. RIP Boss. I owe you so much. You were incredible” – Alan Shearer.
