Brazilian authorities have launched an investigation into the company behind a Taylor Swift concert promotion after a fan died in extreme heat during the concert, DPA/TCA agencies reported on Friday, citing Agerpres.
A representative of the Rio de Janeiro Civil Police Department told NBC News that Time4Fun is under investigation for an alleged “crime of endangering life and health” of spectators during a concert at Nilton Santos Olympic Stadium on November 17.
Despite the sweltering temperatures, thousands of fans packed the stadium for the show, one of the first concerts on Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour.
Among the audience was Ana Clara Benevides Machado, who passed out during the second song performed by the Grammy winner. Machado died later that night at the hospital.
The cause of death has not yet been announced, but the municipal health department of Rio de Janeiro reported that she had stopped breathing. At the time of the performance, the temperature in Rio de Janeiro reached 38 degrees Celsius. Thanks to the humidity of 70%, the temperature is felt at 58 degrees Celsius.
Taylor Swift says she is “overwhelmed with grief” after her fan’s death
Some spectators reportedly fainted, while others complained of the sweltering heat in the stadium and limited access to water. Footage released on social media shortly after the show ended showed Swift choking up after performing her hit song “Bejeweled.”
She postponed her concert scheduled for the following evening because of the very high temperature.
“The safety and well-being of my fans, my colleagues and my crew will always come first,” she wrote on social media. Swift also mourned Machado’s death in a message posted on Instagram, telling fans she was “overwhelmed with grief.”
On Thursday, Time4Fun’s general manager, Serafim Abreu, posted a video in which he apologized to those who “had a bad experience.”
“We are aware of the huge responsibility we have to organize an event of this magnitude, so we have not reduced our efforts or resources to follow the best international practices in our field so that we can guarantee the comfort and safety of everyone,” Abreu said.
