Stellantis has just opened a circular economy center in the historic Mirafiori complex, where the iconic Fiat 500 was born. This center focuses its efforts on used car restoration, used parts restoration and their restoration.

Stellantis has announced its intention to replicate this model in several regions of the world where it is located. The management of the group during a recent press conference also mentioned the creation of several smaller specialized centers.

Recycling, the new “golden goose” for manufacturers?

The Italian hub required an investment in size 40 million euros. This factory already employs 170 people, and ultimately by 2025, about 550 people should be employed here.

In a statement, Carlos Tavares, boss of Stellantis, said: “We are confident that our commitment to restore, repair, reuse and recycle will have a positive impact on our planet, providing financial value to Stellantis. »

In addition to the Circular Economy Hub, Stellantis has also opened a center in Mirafiori dedicated to performance testing and battery development for its electric vehicles. This initiative is part of the group’s broader goal to generate more two billion euros of turnover by 2030 thanks to its activity in the closed cycle economy.

The repaired cars will be sold through the Stellantis network, and the repaired parts will be supplied by the garage. This strategy is also aligned with Stellantis’ commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2038.

Stellantis and Reno, same fight

At the same time, in France, Renault also opened a center dedicated to the circular economy, converting its historic plant in Flints. Vehicles are being repaired there, so that by 2030 this sector will have a turnover of one billion euros.

Battery recycling is a major challenge for the automotive industry today, especially with the forecast that there will be around 350 million electric vehicles on the road by 2030, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), up from 16.5 million in 2021.
