In February 2022, the mayor of Baia Mare, Katalin Chereces, was sentenced by a Cluj court to five years in prison for bribery, the decision is not final.
He was also banned from holding the post of mayor. Thus, the court banned a number of rights for four years: to be elected to state authorities or to any other state positions, to hold positions related to the exercise of state powers, to hold positions of city mayor. .
According to the court’s decision, several months spent in prison in 2016 will be deducted from Cherechesh’s 5-year sentence.
The court also ruled to uphold the lien placed by DNA on several of the mayor’s assets, including a Porsche Cayenne and several parcels of land. The court also decided to confiscate the total amount of 65,000 lei and 5,000 euros, therefore, if the said sums are not found, the confiscation should be carried out in the equivalent. In this case, DNA sent Cherechesh to court in September 2018.
On 29 June 2023, Cătălin Cherecheș announced that he had returned to the PSD, “coming home”. Čerečes also went through PNȚCD, UNPR and PNL.
Cătălin Cherecheș has been the mayor of Baia Mare since 2011.
